Class of 73

Tom Hancock

I have been in the recruiting business on my own since 1990 and specialise in recruiting in the Funds Management space. Which is proving interesting in the current times. I have 3 children  - Isabel aged 10, John aged 8 and William aged 7. For those who don't know I married an American lady Lynn and as a result have spent considerable time visiting her family in the US every 2 years or so. I live in Neutral Bay. I am still keen on sailing and surfing. I have a Hood 23 Sailing boat, which is badly in need of a good sail. Most of my sailing is twilight racing, which I do out of Kirribilli - on Friday afternoons. Overall life is good and centred around my children and family. Did I mention I like fishing! Today, the closest I get to Aloysius is when I view the buildings as I walk across the bridge – as I do most evenings – from my office in the city to my house in Naremburn. The place doesn’t look much different, though I dare say, I do – though the hairdresser cut out most of the grey just before this photo was taken. After Aloysius I worked for the ABC in radio, then did a political stint in Canberra before returning to Sydney to work for 2GB. It was at this time I realised that journalism might be noble, but it doesn’t pay. I went over to the dark side of PR and worked for Qantas, the then Southern Pacific Hotels (Parkroyal and Travelodge) and for the past decade as Communications Manager for Accor Asia Pacific (Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis, Formule 1 et al….I have to get a plug in for the brands at every opportunity). I’m on my second marriage, second set of children (that makes three in total), but, alas, they won’t be continuing the Aloysius line. Enjoy the reunion. (2008)

I was with the "1973 finishing class" from 1966 (5th grade) to 1968 (1st form) Lived in Belgium in 1969 Then joined the "1974 finishing class" from 1970 (2nd from) to 1974 (6th form).

I run a small architecture/archaeology/heritage advice practice. My wife (ex-Monte!) is a partner in the practice, which is based in Belconnen, Canberra. We have three grown children (a vet, an army pilot and a nurse). I actually spend about two weeks of the month at home, because the other two weeks I travel in NSW to provide heritage advisory services to shire councils, visiting Yass, Griffith, Lockhart, Moss Vale, Picton and Katoomba.

Going back in time, for my graduation year in architecture, I studied under the architect Harry Seidler. After completing the course, I travelled extensively and lived in England, working on middle eastern projects, which included water feature courtyards, the award winning Al Kharama hospital in Baghdad and the Dolphinarium in Kuwait.

On return to Australia, I moved to Canberra and worked as design architect for contracts to the Department of Defence, ASIO and Special Services Section (DHC). These contracts covered a wide spectrum, ranging from detailing ballistic furniture, to commissioning of art works for office interiors.

This led to the formation of Black Mountain Projects with Amanda Gaunt (my wife) in the late 1980s. Since then, the family business has worked on a wide range of complex educational, commercial and residential building projects, usually run on tight budgets. The heritage consulting started with a PhD in historical archaeology and some published books on settlement history and Aboriginal archaeology. www.blackmountainprojects.com

My days at Aloysius are such a long time ago and it was only 3 years but 3 very happy ones; in fact happier than those at Riverview.  The memory is indelibly attached to Damian Peach who we lost after the HSC.  Damian was a great friend and I have kept in contact with his family for over 35 years.

I have no sad tales to tell.  I studied Pure Maths at Sydney University followed by Actuarial Studies at Macquarie but never completed the external exams to become a qualified actuary.  Joining the financial markets, first as an actuarial clerk at a reinsurance company, I formed my own consulting firm in 1987 and have generally been able to keep myself employed through the ups and downs of the financial services industry.   I now work as a Project Manager and have become a “father figure” in the offices where I am employed simply because everyone is 20 years or more younger..
On a personal front, the love of my life slipped past me many years ago although I am god parent to her children. I retain very close ties to all of my family, my god children and the families of many friends - a fairly good substitute for my only regret - the children I have not had. Maybe the reason was I was at sea too much for sailing has been a dominant feature of my life for 40 years. I am still ocean racing, albeit no longer to Hobart.

The photo is taken on my yacht and the jacket I am wearing represents my other major recreational hobby.  I own a classic Vauxhall and for 20 years have been a keen participant in the classic car scene, if only to break away from the relentless sailing! (2008)

Water sports have always been included near the top of my list. These have primarily included swimming, diving and sailing. Over the years I have competed in 12 Sydney Hobart Yacht Races with the last two skippering my own yacht Katinka (katinka.com.au) My wife enjoys the social aspects of sailing but regularly declines the invitation to crew on a race to Hobart. Photography funded my years at Teachers college and supplemented the earnings of a beginning teacher but as the world, the sea and family called, it dropped off to the point where today I use a point and click digital. Work has continued in Catholic Education as a Teacher, Subject Master and IT Manager. (2008)
